The Kolkata Metro spokesperson on Monday (June 24) informed that the construction activities are progressing rapidly at various metro stations along the New Garia-airport corridor, with plans to extend train services up to Beleghata soon.
Currently, trains are operational along the 5.40 km stretch from New Garia (Kavi Subhash) to Ruby More (Hemanta Mukhopadhyay) stations. Another 4.39 km section extending to Beleghata has received clearance after thorough safety evaluations required for commissioning.
“The commercial services on this extended stretch will start very soon,” the spokesperson confirmed.
Easing traffic congestion and enhancing connectivity
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the service between Kavi Subhash and Hemanta Mukhopadhyay stations in March. Progress on the entire 28.90 km Orange Line corridor is reportedly proceeding smoothly.
Efforts are also underway to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance connectivity from New Town and Rajarhat townships to other parts of Kolkata, the spokesperson noted. Significant advancements have been made along the New Town to Airport corridor segment.
“Ninety percent of the civil engineering work from the IT hub to City Centre-II, part of the Orange line, is complete. Electrical, signal, and telecommunication works are currently in progress,” the spokesperson elaborated.
