The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) veteran leader, Lal Krishna Advani, was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi on Wednesday night. According to the doctors, the leader is stable and under observation.
The 96-year-old leader has been kept under the supervision of doctors of the geriatric department of AIIMS, Delhi. “LK Advani is admitted at AIIMS New Delhi. He is stable and under observation,” read the AIIMS statement.
Advani, who was born in Pakistan in 1927 and joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1942, was recently awarded with the Bharat Ratna by President Draupadi Murmu on March 30, 2024.
Advani served as the BJP national president from 1986 to 1990, then from 1993 to 1998, and from 2004 to 2005, becoming the longest-appointed president of the party.
After a parliamentary career spanning nearly three decades, LK Advani served as Home Minister and then Deputy Prime Minister in Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s cabinet from 1999 to 2004.
As Leader of the Opposition leading up to the 2009 elections, Advani was widely regarded as the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Prime Ministerial candidate. This assumption was confirmed when, on 10 December 2007, the BJP’s Parliamentary Board officially announced Advani as PM their candidate for the upcoming general elections.
However, when the Congress party and its allies won the 2009 general elections, Advani stepped aside, allowing Sushma Swaraj to assume the role of Leader of the Opposition in the 15th Lok Sabha.
