Nissan has been living on very thin ice in India for a long time now with low monthly sales volume. A major reason for this is a thin portfolio with the only model in its lineup being the Magnite, which isn’t a very high-selling model in itself.
However, Nissan isn’t ready to give up on the Indian market and desperately wants to increase its market share which currently stands below 1%. The Japanese carmaker has teased the X-Trail which is expected to launch in India sometime later this year. Nissan has sent media invites for a test drive of a vehicle without naming it.
Nissan X-Trail in India
Along with the invite, the company has shared a short teaser clip of the vehicle which only highlights the grille of the car flanked by the sleek inverted L-shaped LED DRLs. The teaser image and video are proof enough that it is indeed the X-Trail courtesy of the very familiar face featuring the reverse trapezoidal V-motion grille with a chrome surround, and a front camera.
That said, the Nissan X-Trail isn’t a whole new offering for the Indian market, as it was on sale between 2005 and 2014. In fact, the X-Trail was one of the three SUVs showcased by the Japanese carmaker in October 2022 alongside Juke, and Qashqai. Currently in its fourth generation, Nissan is most likely to bring a fully-imported CBU version of the X-Trail to India at least initially.
Nissan X-Trail India spec details
Available in five- and seven-seat configurations globally, the new X-Trail is underpinned by the modular architecture concept of the CMF-C platform that has been co-developed alongside alliance partner Renault. The India-spec X-Trail could be offered in both five- and seven-seat versions.
Powering the X-Trail will be a 1.5-litre turbo petrol mild hybrid powertrain which dishes out 201 bhp and 330 Nm of peak torque. A CVT automatic gearbox will be offered as standard. This powertrain is likely to be available in both front and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations.
Given its premium positioning, the X-Trail is loaded with multiple creature comforts including three-zone climate control, powered tailgate, panoramic sunroof, engine start-stop button, all-LED illumination and more. Other visual highlights include wraparound two-piece taillights, door cladding, rear wiper and washer integrated spoiler with a top-mounted stop lamp, shark-fin antenna, and dual-tone alloy wheels.
Upon launch, Nissan X-Trail will lock horns with premium mid-size SUVs like Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Compass, Volkswagen Tiguan and Skoda Kodiaq.
