Why should you wait for Mahindra Thar 5 door: New features revealed

As Mahindra gears up to launch the most awaited SUV in 2024, a fresh set of Thar 5-door spy images have surfaced. Beyond the tweaked exterior design and cabin updates, Mahindra has upped the ante with state-of-the-art safety functions like ADAS Level 2 like the XUV700 and the recently launched 3X0. Unlike the Scorpio, the Thar Armada will sport a dual-panel or a panoramic sunroof. Here’s all to expect from the brand-new 2024 Thar Armada. 

Mahindra Thar 5 door: First-in-class features

In August 2020, Mahindra unveiled the second generation Thar, which was later available in October of the same year. The SUV was sent for Global NCAP safety ratings and received four stars for adult and child occupant protection. The three-door Thar or the model currently available in the market comes standard with two airbags. With safety norms changing in the market, the Thar Armada could feature six airbags like Mahindra’s newer models like the Scorpio and the 3X0. 

The compact SUV, the 3X0, broke the mould to be the first one equipped with ADAS Level 2 and the new 5-door Thar will also be getting this safety feature. The ADAS suite will consist of functions like adaptive cruise control, auto emergency brakes for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles, forward collision warning, traffic sign recognition, lane keep assist, lane departure warning and much more.

The 5-door Thar will be the first SUV in its class to sport a panoramic sunroof as its two rivals the Force Gurkha and Maruti Suzuki Jimny don’t even offer a single-panel sunroof.  

Mahindra Thar 5 door: Engine specifications

The Thar Armada will retain the three engines already available in the current three-door Thar. In the four-wheel-drive system, the Thar will be paired with either the 2.2-litre diesel or the 2-litre petrol. The diesel has an output of 130 bhp and 300 Nm while the petrol produces 150 bhp and 300 Nm. There will also be an affordable rear-wheel-drive model, which has a 1.5-litre diesel engine with 117 bhp and 300 Nm, which is only available with a 6-speed manual transmission. The other two versions get an option of either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic torque converter. 

Mahindra Thar 5 door: Design updates

The Thar Armada will get all-new LED lighting with an updated front grille along with revised front and rear bumpers and a rear wiper. The mid trims will sport alloy wheels while the top models will get 19-inch premium diamond-cut alloy wheels. Based on the spy images, there’s a 10.25-inch infotainment system and an all-digital instrument cluster. There will also be front and rear armrests and rear air condition vents.  

Mahindra Thar 5 door: Competition

The Mahindra Thar Armada’s direct competition will be the recently launched 5-door Force Gurkha, though the latter is only available with a manual gearbox and lacks modern features. The 5-door Gurkha is priced at Rs 18 lakh. There’s also a much more capable yet compact, the Maruti Suzuki Jimny. Like the Gurkha, the Jimny comes standard with a 4×4 drivetrain and starting Rs 12.74 lakh to Rs 14.79 lakh, ex-showroom. The Jimny offers two transmission options — the 5-speed manual and the 4-speed automatic torque converter.
